Your Neighbour Found Termites. Should You Be Worried About Your House?

The message comes through the neighbourhood chat group: someone nearby has found termites.

And suddenly you’re looking at your own house thinking: what about us?

Termites create anxiety because so much of their activity can remain hidden. Unlike a broken pipe or cracked window, you may not immediately see the problem developing.

Finding termites at a neighbouring property doesn’t automatically mean your home has termites. But it can be a useful reminder that termite activity exists in the local environment and that your own property deserves attention too.

Potential risk factors around homes can include timber contacting soil, garden beds built against structures, moisture issues, stored timber, inaccessible inspection zones and other conditions that may make termite activity harder to detect.

The difficult part for homeowners is that worrying doesn’t provide any useful information. An inspection does.

A professional termite inspection allows a trained technician to assess accessible areas of the property for signs of termite activity and conditions that may increase risk. Instead of spending weeks wondering whether something might be happening behind the walls, you have information you can act on.

And that’s really what an inspection gives you: certainty where previously there was uncertainty.

If there’s no evidence of activity, you can breathe easier.

If something does require attention, finding out sooner gives you the opportunity to respond.

Your neighbour finding termites doesn’t need to send you into panic mode. But it might be the reminder you need to stop wondering about your own home.
