Myth: Winter Kills Spiders

When the temperature drops, it’s easy to assume spiders disappear for the winter. After all, we tend to see fewer webs, fewer hunts across the floor and fewer unexpected eight-legged visitors.

But does winter actually kill spiders? Not necessarily.

Spiders have a range of clever survival strategies that help them make it through the colder months.

Some species become less active, slowing their metabolism and conserving energy until conditions improve. Others seek out protected areas where temperatures are more stable – and unfortunately, your home, shed or garage can provide exactly the shelter they’re looking for.

Cracks, roof voids, wall cavities, storage areas and other undisturbed spaces can give spiders somewhere protected from wind, rain and frost.

Some spider species may die off after breeding, but their populations survive through eggs. Spider egg sacs can contain dozens – or even hundreds – of eggs, remaining protected until warmer weather triggers hatching.

That means fewer visible spiders during winter doesn’t necessarily mean there are fewer spiders around your property.

In fact, winter can be a useful time to look at the conditions that may encourage spiders before activity increases again in spring.

Reducing clutter, removing webs, sealing gaps around doors and windows and limiting other insects around the home can all help make your property less attractive to spiders. Because spiders feed on insects, an increase in other pest activity can also give them a reason to stick around.
