Pest Management: DIY v PRO

When pests show up, it’s tempting to reach for a quick DIY fix you’ve seen online or on a late-night ad. Ultrasonic plug-ins, vinegar sprays, DIY “bug bombs” – they all promise fast, easy results. The reality is very different. In many cases, these options don’t solve the problem and can even make it worse.
Here are some common DIY pest myths – and what actually works instead.

Myth 1: Ultrasonic plug-ins will drive pests away for good
Those little devices that claim to repel rodents, spiders and insects with sound waves sound great in theory. In practice, there is very limited independent evidence they do anything meaningful.
Pests quickly adapt to background noise, and sound waves don’t travel effectively through walls, cupboards and furniture – exactly where pests like to hide. Homeowners often keep buying new gadgets while the real problem (nests, entry points and food sources) remains untouched.
Myth 2: Vinegar will fix an ant problem
Vinegar can temporarily disrupt an ant trail by masking their scent, so it may look like it’s working – for a day or two. But it does not kill the colony or the queen.
Once the vinegar dries and the scent fades, the ants simply establish a new trail, often popping up in a different part of the house. Without targeting the nest, you’re just chasing ants from one bench to another.
Myth 3: DIY “bug bombs” wipe out everything
Aerosol “foggers” and bombs can feel satisfying – you set them off and walk away. However, they mostly kill exposed insects, not those hidden deep in wall voids, roof spaces, under floors or inside nests.
Worse, they can drive pests further into the structure and spread chemical residue where it’s not needed. Incorrect use also carries safety risks for families, pets and people with asthma or sensitivities.
Why targeted professional treatment works better
Effective pest management does three things:
Identifies the pest correctly – different species need different products and strategies.
Targets the source – nests, entry points, harbourage areas and food/water sources.
Uses the right product in the right place – applied safely and precisely.
Professionals combine low-tox, high-impact treatments with practical advice on proofing and prevention. Instead of masking the problem, they break the pest life cycle and reduce the chance of repeat infestations.
DIY quick fixes may feel cheaper upfront, but repeated failures, property damage and ongoing stress can cost far more in the long run. A proper inspection and targeted treatment is often the most effective – and economical – way to protect your home.
